Pack your bag for labor

Make some preparations at least three weeks before your due date.

For your own sake, you'll probably want to pack:
• Your birth plan and hospital notes.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement or is too hot during labour.
• 3 Loose and comfortable clothes to change into.
• If you plan to breastfeed, get a couple of comfortable and supportive bras, including a nursing bra - remember that your breasts will be much larger than normal.
• breast pads.
• 2 packs of super absorbent sanitary or maternity pads.
• 5-6 pairs of shorts - It's a good idea to bring disposable trousers.
• Toiletry bags containing toothbrushes, hairbrushes, washcloths, soaps, lip balms, deodorants, hair ties and other toiletries towels
• A fan or water spray to cool you down
• Front-facing or loose-fitting nightgowns or tops if you plan to breastfeed
• a TENS machine if you intend to use one

For the baby, you might want to pack:
• Bodysuits, vests and sleepsuits
• An outfit for going home in
• Hat, scratch mitt and socks or boots
• Plenty of nappies
• Muslin squares or bibs
• A shawl or blanket
• Child seat for the way home

Home births
If you plan to give birth at home, discuss planning and preparation with your midwife. Consider where in your home you would like to give birth.

You're likely to need
• clean bed clothes and towels
• clothes (including a hat) and nappies for the baby
• 2 packets of super-absorbent sanitary or maternity pads

Get prepared
Plan ahead as much as possible because when you get home you don't want to do anything other than rest and take care of your baby.
If possible, purchase basic items such as toilet paper, napkins and diapers in advance.
If you have a freezer, you can cook and freeze some meals ahead of time.

Transport
You need to plan how to get to the hospital or maternity clinic at any time of the day or night.
If you are arriving by car, please ensure that your vehicle is in good working order and that there is always enough petrol in your tank.
If you say someone else will take you, please make other arrangements if that person is not available.
